9 Foods That May Cause Facial Hair Growth & Absent Periods

by Laterria Patton

Women who have hair on the areas of their body where men typically grow hair, such as the face, chest, and back, may be suffering with a condition called Insulin Resistance.

Insulin is a hormone that helps to control the amount of glucose that is present in the blood. Insulin keeps your blood glucose level from getting too high or too low. Glucose is a sugar you get from foods you eat that your body uses for energy. Consistently eating large amounts of foods throughout the day that spike your insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance over time.

With insulin resistance, the body’s cells stop responding normally to insulin and this prevents glucose from entering the cells as easily, which causes there to be too much glucose in the blood. The body will then try to correct the excessive amount of glucose in the blood by producing even more insulin. High insulin levels in women can cause the ovaries to make an abnormally high amount of androgen hormones. Androgen hormones such as testosterone, play a role in male traits and reproductive activity. That is why you start to notice symptoms like increased male patterned hair growth, acne, irregular or few periods and more weight gain around your waist.

To prevent, manage or reverse insulin resistance you need to minimize the amount of foods that you are consuming that encourage your pancreas to produce too much insulin.
